Q&A Session 1 - Adrian Rogulski

Dog Handler &

Search Technician of Specialist Search Dogs - Founding Member

Question 1

How did you come about your role within Specialist Search Dogs and what does it entitle?

Answer

I have always had a passion for search and rescue operations and a deep love for working with dogs. My journey with Specialist Search Dogs began when I realised the critical need for specialized canine units in victim recovery missions. With my background in search and rescue, along with extensive training in dog handling, I co-founded the charity with my friends Colin Monk and Matthew Skillen to address this vital need.

As a board member and dog handler at Specialist Search Dogs, my role is multifaceted. I am responsible for the strategic planning and execution of search and rescue operations, ensuring that our teams are prepared and equipped to handle a variety of scenarios. This involves coordinating with law enforcement, emergency services, and other relevant agencies to plan and conduct effective search missions.

In planning our search and rescue operations, I work closely with Colin who is a great help regarding his experience and our team to develop detailed action plans. This includes assessing the search area, determining the best deployment strategies for our dogs, and managing logistics to ensure timely and efficient operations. My role requires meticulous attention to detail and the ability to adapt quickly to changing circumstances in the field.

Another crucial aspect of my role is spearheading our awareness programs and helping members organize events like conferences. These events are designed to educate the public and professionals about the importance of search and rescue dogs in victim recovery. I coordinate with speakers, arrange logistics, and develop educational materials to ensure our events are impactful and informative.

Through our dedicated efforts, Specialist Search Dogs has made significant strides in victim recovery operations, bringing closure to families and assisting law enforcement in their critical work. Looking ahead, my vision is to expand our reach and capabilities, ensuring that our canine teams are at the forefront of search and rescue missions

Question 2

Since you and your team have developed Specialist Search Dogs, have you specialised in any specific areas that were new to you?

If so, what and when did your journey within that area start?

Answer

We quickly found that our team members did not have the same qualifications, so we decided to bring everyone together and organize training sessions to align our qualifications and skills, which are vital to our role. To be effective, we realized that we couldn’t be just dog handlers; we needed to acquire additional skills such as water rescue and lowland search technician training, among others. These skills are essential to provide support to other emergency services and work safely alongside them.

We train together to the highest standards, guided by the best specialists in each training area. While the journey began when the charity was founded, our training is ongoing. Personally, water rescue was a new area I needed to master. I really enjoyed the training, as it required careful planning and critical thinking about the safety of myself and my team members.

Question 3

What does your overall training consist of within Specialist Search Dogs?

Answer

Our overall training occurs every three months with the entire team, where we conduct full search scenario exercises or focus on specific aspects of the search process. This approach ensures that all team members are involved in planning and assessing different aspects of the training and allows us to evaluate our dogs. Given that we are spread across the UK, dogs are trained individually or in small groups. Typically, qualified dogs train once or twice a week, while young dogs undergo intensive training four or more times a week to prepare for their roles.

In addition to regular training, we also provide specialized training such as K9 support, first aid, Emergency Rescue Casualty Care, navigation, and powerboat operation. We are very proud of our members and the hard work they put into their own training. Over the past eight months, we have delivered eight training sessions for our members, helping them gain new vital skills.

Question 4

What is your favourite part about working within the team?

Answer

My favourite part about working within the team is planning and adapting search operations and training so we can use our dogs more effectively for both our benefit and theirs. Personally, I love working as K9 support, observing other handlers’ skills, and learning from them. Sharing experiences with team members is my favourite aspect, and we are fortunate to have open-minded individuals who understand that constant discussion and problem-solving are not criticisms but ways to move forward and reshape our methods to meet our needs. I’m happy to be part of a group of like-minded people who have search and recovery in their hearts and understand how important our help is for our communities.

Question 5

How can the members of the public support the charity and the amazing work that you and your team do?

Answer

The public can support Specialist Search Dogs in several meaningful ways. Financial donations are crucial for covering the costs of training, equipment, veterinary care, and operational expenses. Every donation, no matter the size, helps us maintain our high standards and respond effectively to search and rescue missions.

Volunteering is another impactful way to help. We welcome individuals who are passionate about search and rescue to join us as volunteers. Opportunities include assisting with training sessions, helping at events, providing administrative support, or even training to become a dog handler. Volunteers play a vital role in our operations and community outreach.

Organizing or participating in fundraising events is a fantastic way to support us. Whether it’s a charity run, bake sale, or online crowdfunding campaign, these activities raise both funds and awareness for Specialist Search Dogs. Community-led initiatives can significantly boost our resources and visibility.

Raising awareness about our mission is essential. The public can help by sharing information about Specialist Search Dogs on social media, attending our events, and talking to friends and family about our work. Increased awareness can lead to more support and collaboration opportunities.

In-kind donations are also valuable. Items such as dog food, training equipment, and first aid supplies are always in demand. Additionally, professional services such as veterinary care, printing, and marketing support can greatly benefit our operations.

Finally, businesses and organizations can help by partnering with us or offering sponsorships. Corporate sponsorships can provide significant financial support, while partnerships can lead to mutually beneficial collaborations. For example, companies can sponsor a dog or a training program, helping us sustain our activities.

By contributing in these ways, the public can play a vital role in supporting Specialist Search Dogs and enhancing our ability to serve communities in need.
